West Bessacarr is an area which has a large proportion of older people. Older people add great wisdom and richness to any group and we value them highly. To that end, as a church, we promote activities that are attractive to older people. These are organised under the name of J.O.Y. (Just Older Youngsters)
We also seek to be available to help older people in time of need. We do this in number of ways:
Cafe Theo provides a friendly place of meeting for people of all ages between 10am and 2pm every Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday Friday and from 9.30am to 1pm on Saturdays.
On the first Monday of the Month at 1.30pm is Puzzle Corner a chance to gather and chat with people while playing games and doing jigsaws
On the second Monday of each month we have a lunch club for all the community called Meet and Eat. It is from 12 to 2pm and is a great chance to make new friends and do activities together. Transport is available for the less mobile. (Phone Sarah on 535747)
On the third Monday of Monday of each month between 1.30pm and 3pm there is Chit Chat in the Cafe. This is an activity aimed at enabling oder people to meet other and deepen friendships.
On the fourth Monday of each month at 11am there is Knit and Natter and this is followed by soup lunch at 12.30pm.
Each summer for a few days near the beginning of August we have "Holiday At Home" where there are lots of activities, meals, and fun for older people so that those that cannot go for a holiday feel that they have had a great time while remaining in Doncaster.
For those who are living alone for whatever reason we also have a group called Aspire. In this group people get together for a coffee in Cafe Theo and then plan a variety of activities and events that people can choose to join in with. eg) trips to the theatre, coffee shops, National Trust sites, games evenings etc
Be available to offer practical help to older people in our community through lifts to appointments, occassional help with shopping and home visiting. Please phone Sarah Rogerson on 01302 535747 for practical help.
At 12 noon just before Meet and Eat we have a 10 minute service with prayers, reading and a short reflection based upon issues relevant for older people
One the first Sunday of the month at 6pm a traditional communion service with traditional hymns. This is attended by people of all ages although is particularly enjoyed by older people. Help with transport to this event is available. (Phone 538487)
